- Is the Word Counter free?
- Yes. You can count drafts with no sign-up and no per-use fee.
- Does it count characters and reading time too?
- Yes. Alongside words you get characters (with and without spaces), sentences, paragraphs, lines, an estimated reading time, and an estimated speaking time. For character-only limits such as bios, SMS, or meta descriptions, use Character Counter.
- How is reading and speaking time calculated?
- Reading time assumes roughly 200 words per minute of silent reading; speaking time assumes about 130 words per minute out loud. Both are rounded up to the nearest minute, so treat them as planning estimates rather than exact timings.
- Should I use Word Counter or Sentence Counter?
- Use Word Counter for word totals and reading time. Use Sentence Counter when you care about sentence count and average sentence length.
- Does word count include hyphenated or Unicode words?
- Counts are Unicode-aware and treat letter/number sequences (including common contractions) as words. Hyphenated compounds such as “on-device” count as two words because the hyphen separates them.
- Is there a word limit?
- No fixed limit. Counting happens on your device, so the practical ceiling is your browser memory — long chapters and full reports paste fine.
- Is my essay uploaded?
- No. All counting runs locally in your browser. Close the tab to discard the text.
