- Why is “3 of 9” another name for Code 39?
- Each character is drawn as nine elements, three of which are wide — hence “3 of 9”. It is the same symbology, so a scanner set up for Code 39 reads these barcodes.
- Why was my value rejected?
- Code 39 has a limited character set: letters, digits, and - . $ / + % plus space. Anything else, such as an underscore, comma, or accented letter, cannot be encoded — use Code 128 if you need the full range.
- Do I need the asterisk start and stop characters?
- No. The required start and stop markers are added for you, so type only the value itself rather than wrapping it in asterisks.
