A log line, a homework sheet, or a comment in old code shows a row of ones and zeros. You can squint at 01001000 01101001 and almost remember that it starts with “H”. You should not have to.
Binary to Text decodes that string in the browser. Paste, read the text, copy or download it. Nothing is sent to a server — handy when the bits came from a private note, not a textbook example.
The other direction, when you already have the sentence and want the bits, is Text to Binary. That guide is convert text to binary.
What the decoder expects
Groups of bits, separated by spaces, commas, or semicolons. Each group should be 8 bits (one byte) or 16 bits.
01001000 01101001 is a normal 8-bit pair. A single unbroken string with no spaces is treated as one group, so its length still has to land on a multiple of 8, or be exactly 16.
Eight-bit groups are read as UTF-8. If the bytes are not valid UTF-8, the tool falls back to a direct character mapping. Sixteen-bit groups are read as code units, which is what you want for some wider encodings people paste as 16 ones and zeros per character.
If a token contains a 2, a letter, or a group of 7 bits, you get an error instead of a wrong sentence. That is better than a confident gibberish decode.
A tiny example
Binary:
01001000 01101001
Text:
Hi
Space is a character too. 00100000 is the space byte, not “please insert a space in the binary for me.” If your source omitted separators, add a space every 8 bits before you blame the tool.
When the output looks wrong
Off-by-a-bit groups. Someone wrapped the line at 6 or 10 characters. Recount. Homework sheets love to do this.
You pasted hex by mistake. 48 69 is hexadecimal for “Hi”, not binary. Use Number Base Converter for hex, decimal, and octal. Binary only wants 0 and 1.
You wanted numeric codes, not a sentence. Character codes like 72 105 are ASCII to Text, not binary.
The source was a file, not text. This box decodes a binary representation written as digits. It does not open an .exe or a JPEG.
Steps
- Open Binary to Text.
- Paste the bits.
- If the message names an invalid token, fix that group — usually a stray character from a line number.
- Copy the text or download the
.txt.
FAQ
Is this the same as Base64?
No. Base64 is a different encoding, used so binary can travel through text systems. Decode that with Base64. If the string has letters like A–Z and digits mixed with + or /, it is not plain binary.
Does decoding run on a server?
No. The conversion happens in the page. Still, do not paste secrets you would not want in your clipboard history.
Why did 16-bit groups decode differently from 8-bit?
They are different widths. A 16-bit pattern is one code unit, not two UTF-8 bytes. Match the width the encoder used. If you made the bits with Text to Binary, decode with the same grouping you exported.
