The bottle on the shelf has a UPC. The case of twelve bottles that shows up at the receiving dock? That's usually ITF-14 — interleaved bars encoding a GTIN-14 for cartons, master packs, and pallets. Different packaging level, different barcode.

ITF-14 builds case-level symbols. Consumer units use UPC-A or EAN-13.

Receiving docks scanning master cartons as they come off the truck. Pallet labels on B2B shipments between distributors and retailers. Anywhere the question is "what's in this case?" rather than "what's this single item?"

How to generate one correctly

Start with your item GTIN and derive GTIN-14 using the correct packaging indicator digit — GS1 has specific rules for this, and guessing the indicator digit causes receiving rejections.

Open ITF-14, enter the 14-digit value, and confirm the check digit. Export with bearer bars if your printer spec or logistics partner requires them. Then test from realistic warehouse conditions — forklift distance, fluorescent lighting, maybe a slightly crooked angle.

What makes ITF-14 different from retail barcodes

Numeric only. Wider bars than UPC, so you need more label area. Print contrast matters a lot on brown corrugated cardboard — if the brown is eating your black bars, switch to white label stock.

For internal warehouse tracking that isn't tied to GS1 retail data, teams often use Code 39 or Code 128 instead.

Compliance isn't optional

GTIN-14 has to trace back to registered product data, and the case quantity has to match your master pack definition. A case label that says 12 when the case actually holds 24 is a receiving nightmare.

Can I slap an EAN-13 on a shipping case instead?

Different packaging level, different symbology, different purpose. They're not interchangeable on the same label job.

Brown cardboard is killing our scan rate. Help?

Low contrast is the usual culprit. Print on white label stock or use thicker black bars. Don't fight the cardboard color.

Does our logistics partner require bearer bars?

Check their spec sheet. Some partners require horizontal bearer bars; some don't. Follow what they publish.

Can I verify with a phone camera?

Scan Code works fine on proofs. But the real test is your warehouse's industrial imager at receiving distance.
