UPC-A Barcodes for US Retail Products
Generate UPC-A barcodes — 12-digit North American product codes for shelves and marketplaces. Free browser barcode tool.
NeedAnyToolPublished Updated 2 min read

If you're listing on Amazon, pitching to Walmart, or walking into a US grocery chain, someone will ask for a UPC-A. Twelve digits under bars that every checkout scanner in North America knows how to read.
UPC-A renders the symbol from your GTIN-12. Much of the rest of the world uses EAN-13 on shelf — same product data, different geography and packaging norms.
Before you generate anything
Own a valid UPC from GS1 (or from a reseller your retailer actually accepts — policies vary). The digits under the bars must match the human-readable number printed below them. One SKU gets one code; don't recycle barcodes across different products.
Turning your number into a label
Open UPC-A and enter your 11 data digits plus check digit — or the full 12 if the tool validates as you type. Preview the human-readable numbers sitting under the bars. Export PNG or SVG for your packaging agency.
Scan a proof with Scan Code before the print run. Marketplace listing photos with blurry barcodes get rejected, so export vector when you can and photograph the proof flat with even lighting.
UPC-A vs EAN-13 vs EAN-8
United States and Canada retail? UPC-A. Europe and much of the world? EAN-13. Tiny packages that can't fit a full strip? EAN-8.
EAN-13 often embeds a UPC with a leading zero — know which format your retailer's product form actually asks for before you submit.
Shipping cases are different
The unit on shelf gets UPC-A. The master carton going to a warehouse dock usually gets ITF-14. Different packaging level, different symbology.
You're encoding public product IDs here — no personal data hides in the bars.
FAQ
Is UPC-A the same thing as EAN-13?
Not exactly, but they're closely related. EAN-13 can represent a UPC with a leading zero. Check what your specific retailer or marketplace form wants.
My check digit looks wrong. What now?
A good generator validates as you type. Fix it before print — wrong check digits mean rejected shipments.
I only need the barcode image for Amazon. Is that enough?
You still need the number properly registered. The image is just rendering digits you already own.
Can I use UPC-A on a shipping carton?
That's what ITF-14 is for. UPC-A is the consumer unit code, not the case code.
